Vadim Brezhnev

Vadim Brezhnev, 91, of Creve Coeur, Missouri, passed away on September 8, 2026. He was born on March 13, 1935, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, and lived a long and extraordinary life marked by resilience, accomplishment, adventure, and a deep love for his family. Vadim's life spanned some of the most difficult and transformative events of the twentieth century. As a young boy, he overcame polio. He later endured the devastating years of World War II and the Siege of Leningrad, surviving starvation and conditions that nearly claimed his life. Those experiences shaped him into a man of remarkable strength and perseverance, yet they never diminished his optimism or his enthusiasm for life. Vadim was an exceptionally intelligent and curious man who was always interested in understanding how things worked and exploring the world around him. He pursued a career as a civil engineer and was an accomplished kayaker who competed nationally and internationally. His love of the outdoors remained with him throughout his life. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting and, in his later years, found great satisfaction in gardening. Vadim was also a gifted storyteller and writer. He wrote a collection of memoirs and short stories, preserving memories of his childhood, his experiences, and the remarkable world through which he lived. Twenty-four years ago, Vadim and his beloved wife, Irina, immigrated to the United States and made their home in St. Louis. They cherished being close to their family and helping raise their grandchildren. Those who knew Vadim will remember his quick wit, creativity, humor, and ability to bring life to any gathering. He loved good food and was a wonderful cook who took great pleasure in hosting friends and family. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family deeply. Vadim is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Irina Pogodina; his daughter, Elena (Kent) Parker; his son, Sergey (Tatiana) Brezhnev; and his grandchildren, Leeda Minkin, Sam Parker, Alex Brezhnev, and Grisha Brezhnev. Vadim will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew him. The family will honor his life privately, and there will be no public service. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Vadim's memory may perform an act of kindness for a friend or neighbor or make a donation to the Dementia Society of America.
