Yang Bong Son M.D.

Dr. Son was born in Hamhung, North Korea on June 23, 1924 to Kuk Jin Son and Kyung Nam Han. He received M.D., Ph.D. from Seoul National University in Korea and became a surgeon. He served with a MASH unit during the Korean War at the Korean Capital Army Hospital. Upon his discharge he had reached the rank of Major. On December 3, 1951 he married the love of his life Dr. Keun S. Lee to which six daughters were born. The family came to America in 1971 and they relocated to Fort Madison, Iowa. Dr. Son was Board - Certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist who had been practicing over thirty years in Fort Madison, Iowa. Survivors include the six daughters: Hyran Son, Carol [George] Fukumoto, Alice [Al] Garcia, Paula [Steve] Machlin, Jenny Son, Tina Currie; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one brother: Yang Kyung Son; and two sisters: Yang Soon Son and Heng Ja Son. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brothers, sisters and one grandchild. Dr. Son loved to draw and paint. He was a very talented painter. He loved to draw landscapes and still lifes. Private graveside services will be held on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 11 am at Bellerive Gardens Cemetery, In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association.
