Dorothy M. Soskin Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Dorothy M. “Dot” Soskin Dot passed away peacefully on November 4, 2021, at the age of 87 after courageously fighting Parkinson’s disease and related issues. Dorothy was born October 28, 1934, to Thomas and Gertrude Hughes. She was the Beloved wife of the late George Donald Hanrahan and Robert Soskin; loving sister of the late Patricia Hughes, the late Thomas (Sandra) Hughes, Nancy Coughlin, Robert (Susan) Hughes, and Susy (Reynaldo) Martorell. Dorothy was the loving mother of Timothy (Jessica), Galen (Melissa), and Michael (Heather) Hanrahan; cherished Nana of Emma, Ellie, and Bixby Hanrahan. She attended St. Rich Elementary School, St. Joseph’s Academy, and Maryville University. Dorothy loved to travel and spent her first two years teaching in Hawaii; she was even there when Hawaii became a state. Next Dorothy headed to Germany to teach American children of soldiers. Dorothy was able then to reconnect with relatives in Ireland and England. She also enjoyed sidewalk cafes in Paris. Dorothy enjoyed singing along at piano bars in French bistros. Dorothy enjoyed many different roles in her life, but being a mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother were her favorites. Dorothy worked as a teacher, social worker, community counselor for an aupair agency, an area coordinator for that aupair agency, and an etiquette consultant. Funny memories…….Special memories Dot dated an astronaut before she met Don. Dot had to sneak onto a Ladue property to pick up an aupair whose host parents had put swans in her bedroom. Dot attended the American School of Protocol in DC While teaching etiquette, Dot had her students use chopsticks to eat popcorn to teach them to take small bites. Maureen attended an etiquette class “undercover” to find out if people liked her and the class…….she wasn’t supposed to tell anyone, but she did. Always showed genuine interest in others… Fashionable… Dot tried microwaving Susan’s Hollandaise sauce into scrambled eggs and ruined it. The Brussels sprouts were awful without it. Took Patty and Bridget shopping as young teens, and she was a Fashionista. Helped organize a wonderful cousin’s reunion in St. Louis which brought cousins from Canada, Ireland, England, and many states. Dinners were organized and all were made to feel welcome! Dorothy and Bob loved traveling here and abroad. They loved the symphony, the Rep, and the Fox Theatre. Dorothy was a gourmet cook and loved having her kids over for her famous corned beef brisket. She enjoyed Irish music and dance, too.
