Cox, Janice E. (nee Metz), baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection, Monday, May 22, 2023. Daughter of the late C. Barney Metz and Alice Joshu. Loving wife of Don Cox. Beloved mother of Allison (Troy) Cecil and Ryan (Stacey) Cox. Mimi of Sydney, Lexi, Jack, Aidan and Wyatt. Sister of Knute (Janet) Metz, Jeannie (late Steve) Brown, and the late Jacque Davis. Sister-in-law of Tom (Lynn) Cox and Betty (Scott) Tarkenton. Beloved aunt and friend to many. Jan was born to C. Barney Metz and Alice Metz on August 14, 1947. She grew up as the oldest of three siblings Knute, Jeannie & Jacque. Jan attended catholic school and after graduating high school, she attended Belleville Junior College, until her father fell ill, and she went to work at TWA. This is where her love of reading and her strong Catholic faith was fostered, which continued throughout her life. Jan spent her late teens and early twenties working at TWA airlines where she discovered her love for traveling the world. She shared that passion with several of her grandchildren - her stories from her trips overseas were some of their favorites. During this time, she met Don, who she often called the love of her life. Six short months later they were married and built a life together for 54 years. When she had her first child, Allison, she assumed the role of stay-at-home mother and six short years later she had her son, Ryan. In the early 1980s, Jan and Don relocated their family from Belleville, Illinois to Chesterfield, Missouri. After moving to the Saint Louis area and her kids started school full-time, Jan found herself ready to take on a new challenge. In 1987, Jan became a charter member of the Assistance League of Saint Louis. She took on many different roles from assisting with cases in Outreach to Vice President of Marketing/Recruitment. She loved helping students in the Operation School Bell program and packing bags of clothes for women in shelters with ROSE. On Tuesdays, you would find Jan at Fantastic Finds, helping wherever she was needed, always with a smile and her wonderful sense of humor. In 2022, Jan was recognized for 35 years of dedicated service. Jan loved being a Mimi more than anything. If her grandkids were doing something, Mimi was there. It did not matter if they had two races to run, they were only playing three innings or if the gymnastics meet was six hours away. If Jan knew how to do one thing, it was how to take care of her family - there was nothing in the world that she cared more fiercely about. This was evident in how she loved to celebrate and have family gatherings. She was always looking for a reason to have family gather at her house and share new recipes that she had found. She became widely known for ‘Mimi’s Slush’ and her ability to make the perfect strawberry pretzel salad (something nobody else can get just quite right!) Jan made a lasting impact on all the lives she touched, not a day will go by that she will not be missed by her family and friends. Jan’s memory lives on with her loved ones: her beloved husband of 54 years Don Cox, daughter Allison Cox Cecil and son Ryan Cox, son-in-law Troy Cecil and daughter-in-law Stacey Olson Cox, her grandchildren Sydney Cecil, Lexi Cecil, Jack Cecil, Aidan Cox and Wyatt Cox, sister Jean (Jeannie) Brown, brother Knute Metz and sister-in-law Janet Metz, and her many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and a great grandnephew. Services: Funeral Mass at St. Alban Roe Catholic Church, Wildwood, Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. Interment Bellerive Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Assistance League of St. Louis.
