Florence J. Lewis

Florence J. Lewis passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2018 and is in the loving arms of her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Mrs. Lewis is survived by her dear husband of almost 54 years, John, and her children and grandchildren: David and Alice L. Thomas of St. Louis (David and Catherine, Andrew, James and Elizabeth), Scott and Harriet L. Muschany of St. Louis (Theodore and Hugh), and Tim and Elizabeth L. Vogel of St. Louis (Lillian), and sister-in-law Anita Gregory Lewis of Seattle, Washington. Born on October 9, 1940 to Dr. Hugh N. and Alice Bradford Johnson, Florence graduated from Mary Institute (elected President of the senior class and Valedictorian) (1958); Smith College A. B., French (1962) and received a Master of Arts in French from Washington University in St. Louis (1967). She studied for one year in Paris at the Sorbonne. Florence taught at John Burroughs School and then at Westminster Christian Academy for 32 years (French and Latin). Her love for Latin was acquired from her mother who was department chair at Mary Institute. Florence faithfully served as Director of Admissions at Westminster Christian Academy for 28 years, helping the school to be distinguished academically and grow from 70 students to more than 1,000 students today. Florence was very creative and energetic. While at Westminster Christian Academy, she conceived, organized and oversaw the Hospitality Club and French Club. These organizations encouraged students to assume responsibility and to work together effectively. She and John designed and led 10 summer trips traveling with students throughout Europe and began the beloved Spirit Week at Westminster. She loved our Lord Jesus Christ. She attended Covenant Presbyterian Church (Town and Country) for her entire life. Florence taught Sunday School classes and Vacation Bible School there and wrote various widely used devotional materials. She was a loving mentor to many. She also organized and led Women’s Bible Studies and Small Group Studies. Florence had a tender, genuine smile that was given freely. She loved kids deeply and was an incredibly wonderful encourager and inspiration to thousands during her career at Westminster Christian Academy as a teacher and friend. She loved her husband well and was faithful to him and her family as an exemplary daughter of our Lord Jesus Christ. Services: A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2143 N. Ballas Road, 63131 on Monday, April 2 at 11 a.m. with a reception immediately following. www.cpcstl.org. A family graveside burial will take place earlier that morning.
